Raise the Pride Flag in Maastricht – For the First Time in Our City’s History
Dear Mayor Hillenaar,
We are writing to you on behalf of PRIDE Maastricht, a collective of individuals, students, artists, entrepreneurs, and organizations based in this city who believe in a Maastricht that is safe, welcoming, and vibrant for all. Many of us are part of the LGBTQIA+ community ourselves, many of us are allies.
Maastricht is a city known for its diversity and forward-thinking spirit. It’s a place where people from across the globe come to live, study, build businesses, and grow. It’s also a place where, unfortunately, LGBTQIA+ people still face marginalization, exclusion, and invisibility in daily life. That is why we respectfully request that the LGBTQIA+ Progress Pride Flag be raised at Maastricht City Hall (Stadhuis) for the entire month of June 2025, especially on the day of the PRIDE Maastricht protest and celebration, Saturday, 28 June 2025.
This would be the first time in Maastricht’s history that the Pride flag is officially raised by the municipality for Pride month. That makes this moment not only historic—but urgent. In a time when LGBTQIA+ rights are increasingly under pressure across Europe and beyond, this public gesture of solidarity and recognition has never mattered more.
We are students, artists, migrants, business owners, and community leaders who help make this city dynamic and innovative. We are queer-owned and queer-led spaces that drive social change, stimulate the local economy, and add cultural vibrancy to Maastricht.
Raising the Pride flag would be more than symbolic. It would recognize this community’s contributions and offer much-needed visibility. It would affirm Maastricht’s values: openness, inclusion, and pride in its diverse population.
We also invite the city to go a step further and become an active member of the Rainbow Cities Network, a coalition of municipalities committed to actively promoting the rights and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ residents. Maastricht has the potential to lead—not just symbolically, but structurally—in creating a city where all people can thrive regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or country of origin.
PRIDE Maastricht was born in 2020 out of the urgent need to create space for queer voices that were marginalized, even within mainstream LGBTQIA+ circles. We build on the energy of grassroots movements and community mutual aid. Today, we continue that work through protest, celebration, art, and collaboration.
We are launching this letter as a public petition, where residents, allies, and organizations can sign to show broad support. We believe that together, we can demonstrate how deeply this city cares about equity, safety, and visibility for all its residents.
We would welcome the opportunity to meet and further discuss how the municipality can work together with us—and many other signatories—to make Pride Month 2025 a moment of joy, courage, and lasting change.

Hijs de regenboogvlag in Maastricht – Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van onze stad
Geachte burgemeester Hillenaar,
Wij schrijven u namens PRIDE Maastricht, een collectief van individuen, studenten, kunstenaars, ondernemers en organisaties uit deze stad die geloven in een Maastricht dat veilig, gastvrij en levendig is voor iedereen. Velen van ons maken deel uit van de LHBTQIA+-gemeenschap, velen van ons zijn medestanders.
Maastricht staat bekend om haar diversiteit en vooruitstrevende geest. Het is een stad waar mensen van over de hele wereld komen om te wonen, studeren, ondernemen en groeien. Tegelijkertijd is het ook een stad waar LHBTQIA+-personen helaas nog steeds te maken krijgen met marginalisatie, uitsluiting en onzichtbaarheid in het dagelijks leven. Daarom vragen wij u met respect om de Progress Pride-vlag gedurende de gehele maand juni 2025 te hijsen aan het Stadhuis van Maastricht, in het bijzonder op de dag van het protest en de viering van PRIDE Maastricht op zaterdag 28 juni 2025.
Dit zou de eerste keer zijn in de geschiedenis van Maastricht dat de regenboogvlag officieel wordt gehesen door de gemeente in de officiële Pride-maand. Daarmee wordt dit niet alleen een historisch moment, maar ook een urgente stap. In een tijd waarin LHBTQIA+-rechten in Europa en daarbuiten steeds meer onder druk komen te staan, is een publiek gebaar van solidariteit en erkenning belangrijker dan ooit.
Wij zijn studenten, kunstenaars, migranten, ondernemers en gemeenschapsleiders die bijdragen aan het dynamische en innovatieve karakter van deze stad. Wij zijn queer-geleide ruimtes die sociale verandering stimuleren, bijdragen aan de lokale economie en culturele levendigheid en creativiteit brengen in Maastricht.
Het hijsen van de Pride-vlag is méér dan symbolisch. Het erkent de bijdrage van deze gemeenschap en biedt broodnodige zichtbaarheid. Het bevestigt de waarden van Maastricht: openheid, inclusiviteit en trots op haar diverse inwoners.
Daarnaast nodigen wij de gemeente uit om nog een stap verder te gaan en actief lid te worden van het Rainbow Cities Network, een coalitie van gemeenten die zich inzetten voor de rechten en inclusie van LHBTQIA+-inwoners. Maastricht heeft de potentie om hierin een voortrekkersrol te vervullen — niet alleen symbolisch, maar ook structureel — door een stad te creëren waarin iedereen zich thuis voelt, ongeacht genderidentiteit, seksuele oriëntatie, fysiek vermogen of land van herkomst.
PRIDE Maastricht werd opgericht in 2020 vanuit de dringende noodzaak om ruimte te creëren voor queer stemmen die ook binnen mainstream LHBTQIA+-structuren gemarginaliseerd werden. Wij bouwen voort op de energie van grassroots-bewegingen en wederzijdse gemeenschapszorg. Vandaag de dag zetten we dit werk voort door middel van protest, viering, kunst en samenwerking.
Wij lanceren deze brief als een publieke petitie, waarbij inwoners, medestanders en organisaties kunnen tekenen om hun brede steun te tonen. Samen kunnen we laten zien hoezeer deze stad staat voor gelijkwaardigheid, veiligheid en zichtbaarheid voor álle inwoners.
Wij zouden het zeer op prijs stellen om met u in gesprek te gaan over hoe de gemeente kan samenwerken met ons — en de vele ondertekenaars — om van Pride-maand 2025 een moment van vreugde, moed en blijvende verandering te maken.
